This year the focus will be on moving through the landscape with simple gear, practicing Stone Age skills along the way and culminating in a two week sailing trip on the Norwegian fjords on a wooden sailing ship, exploring and gathering wild foods from the sea and coast.

Though not required, the immersion is geared toward participants who have a solid foundation in outdoor skills and primitive living. Applicants are encouraged to also attend the Lithica Gathering fund raiser prior to the start of the Summer Immersion where all sorts of primitive skills can be learned and refined.

Ask for an application form and we will assess your knowledge and motivation. The immersion can be taken in its entirety or just by section. Participants taking the Immersion in its entirety will be given priority.

Section One -Mountain

(July 3-30)

Preparation and hike from Mountain to Ocean

(for the application and registration information for

Both sections or Section one only)

During the first week we will prepare food for our hike drying vegetables, meat and fish for jerky and pemmican as well as testing our gear (Modern gear is acceptable but we will endeavour to keep it simple - a list of what to bring will be sent with application)

The plan is to hike (with or without horses) from the Living Wild school at Blikberget along the Pilgrim’s trail to Trondheim and on to Rissa where we will meet our ship and captain for the second section. We may hike all or part of the 320 km depending on timing, weather and suitability but participants must be in good physical condition and at least 16 years old.

Whether we choose to go with the animals or not will depend on the suitability of the trail that will be explored in the spring time.

Section Two- Ocean

(August 1-14)

During this trip we will sail and explore the Norwegian coast, fishing and harvesting the bountiful waters.

Let us adventure together!

Living with the tides, wind and the abundance the Norwegian summer coast has to offer. Sailing makes us one organism, one tribe sharing the arctic summer day or night to roam as we please or as the weather requires. Slowly we sink in and become one with the sea and the many islands there are to explore. We will harvest seaweed, wild plant foods, shells and fish to feed us as we become part of all that is living in and around the waters.

Our beautiful ship ’Skaurungen’ will be our home base, with no engine she will give us the chance to really take in account the wind and tides, sailing when the wind is with us or rowing when she is elsewhere. We will sleep on small Islands, within secret caves or sail on into the bright sunny night.. Fishing, eagles flying above and maybe we find ourselves blessed with a whale encounter.

What will you learn and experience?

-Sailing on a traditional norwegian fishing boat

-Coastal navigation

-Fishing with nets and line.

-Making primitive fishing gear

-Harvesting seaweeds and other seafoods

-Harvesting wild plants.

-Tanning fish leather

-Explore the resources in this environment for tool making

-Sleeping in caves

-Sewing a traditional fishermans jacket.

-Sea shanties, songs and stories

The powerful bonds created in the group often remain for years. The connections made with the land and its non human inhabitants can shift and broaden one’s perspective in a profound manner. If you are ready to leap into an immersion and refine your skills while building community and working through the inevitable challenges that arise then this could be for you.

This immersion will be a rewarding experience.
